Personality: At first glance, Neji is a cold and emotionally withdrawn ninja who is probably too arrogant for even his 'genius' reputation. On closer inspection this is...not completely incorrect. Despite appearances, however, his coldness is not due to a lack of concern or care for his comrades but an inability to express (sometimes a lack of understanding why he should try) those feelings for his comrades. While it may appear on the surface that he doesn't particularly care for the safety of well-being of those around him, he is fully willing to sacrifice his own well-being up to giving his life more than once for those very friends and teammates.
Due to his traumatic and difficult childhood, Neji has constructed such thick emotional walls and retreated so far behind them that even when he chooses to lower them for close loved ones he tends to still maintain what would be a certain cold distance on others. After his father's death and his subsequent blaming it on the main branch of his family (with good reason, considering their poor treatment of his branch up until that point) he became deeply embittered and cynical, becoming hateful toward both his own clan and those he felt were too naive or idiotic to understand the 'truth'. The latter, of course, was out of frustration and jealousy, due to his own seemingly hopeless struggle against 'fate', in effect raging against the naivety of his younger self.
His loss to the 'loser' Naruto and the revelation of the truth about his father's death helped to break the grip of hopeless cynicism on him, restoring some of his faith in freedom of choice, and helping to dispel the resentment and hatred he felt toward his clan as a result. In the aftermath of this, Neji began to make an effort to ease down the cold walls he'd built and reshape his view of the world, letting in his friends and clan as much as possible instead. Despite this, he finds it difficult to express his feelings toward his friends and clan, having spent such a large portion of his life without experiencing these feelings directed toward himself. To lesser degrees, he also struggles with expressing gratitude or praise at times, due to his unfamiliarity with such warm and friendly actions. Still, he makes an effort at expressing and correcting these behaviors regardless of the difficulty it poses.
Given the Hyuga's high profile nature, the clan is a very respected and dignified family. Neji tends to share this strong sense of dignity and unshakable seriousness, and this behavior can sometimes simply exasperate and highlight his apparent emotional distance. Further, this sense of propriety and dignity can cause him to appear humorless, as a poorly (or less than excellently) timed joke may be either ignored or immediately shut down by him. On the contrary, he does possess a sense of humor that those close to him will glimpse...but he usually prefers to reserve it for an 'appropriate' time and intensity.
On the other hand, while he often has no time for frivolity due to his pervasive sense of seriousness, it also means it is difficult to ruffle his feathers or antagonize him--although excessive ridiculousness is still something he has great difficulty putting up with, due to how very much it is the antithesis of his Hyuga pride and dignity.
Neji is dedicated and driven to his training and to his work, partly due to his Hyuga pride (it would be unacceptable to put forth anything but his full effort to such important things, especially when it would be a matter of missed potential should he fail to) and partly due to his (almost) lifelong drive to defy his fate as a branch member, and prove through his skill and talent that he is no lesser than any members of the main branch. This dedication extends to taking his duties, such as his missions, quite seriously and therefore brooking no argument against completion of nor mischief during those missions.
Much of Neji's life was composed of searching for a way to decide his own fate despite the strict rules against his family in the clan and the horrible jutsu placed upon him which could completely strip away his freedom and sense of self at any whim of the main branch. His father's choice to sacrifice himself against his uncle (a main branch member)'s wishes and Naruto's persistence in fighting a losing, impossible battle despite his status as the village's greatest 'loser' both inspired Neji in this search, as did the words of one of his exam proctors, who spoke of how even a caged bird would find a way to pry open the cage with its beak if given motivation.
It could easily be said that these three were the ones to inspire Neji's final act, throwing himself into the path of a deadly missile and choosing to die in the place of his cousin and the village 'loser' to defy both the main family's choice in his life and to defy those who would determine his life as 'better' or 'more important' due to his 'genius'. In the end, in choosing to die as he did, he finally reached and understood the freedom his father found in his own sacrifice. With his curse-mark gone and no one to make his choices for him he is, essentially, finally free and capable of pursuing his own fate, untainted by the control of others around him, from this point onward.
Strengths/Weaknesses:
+Excellent observational and deductive skills (Aided to a supernatural level with the Byakugan, but still excellent without it activated.)

+Genius tactical abilities (Although not to an exceptional level)
+Heightened strength, speed, and endurance (cut in half)

+Confident
+Skilled leader (a requirement of reaching chuunin/jonin level)

=Capable of making snap decisions, but such decisions are not always the correct ones.
=Possesses the observational and calculative ability to be a skilled diplomat, but usually lacks interest in diplomacy.
=Adheres to outlined missions no matter the distraction or mayhem that arises during it, unfortunately will also insist on the mission regardless of moral implications once it's assigned. (However this is likely to be softened when the reputation and livelihood if his village is not on the line)
-Struggles greatly to connect on emotional levels with others
-Very rarely able to relax and enjoy simple, 'ridiculous' things
-Poor sense of humor
-Usually too serious, rarely takes well to jokes even when he gets them.
-Tightly wound and often highly stressed
-Cold and distant even to valued comrades most of the time
-Can be too practical and lack faith in others around him
-Has a weakness toward becoming defeatist or pessimistic due to his presumption that he's usually correct in his conclusions
-Arrogant
-Is rather poor at medium and long ranged combat without his chakra techniques
-Likely too accustomed to relying on Byakugan when aiming for longer-range targets, making his aim poor as well

First Person Sample: [When the feed flickers on, the youth sitting in front of the camera is not looking at the screen. In fact, his pale and featureless gaze is focused on something else--the discerning or the experienced would no doubt deduce he's staring instead at the display, rather than the source of the camera. Given his contemplative expression and lack of focus on the display, it is likely the activation of the device was not fully intentional.
Somewhere behind him, a Meditite seems to be struggling to find her focus, attempting to hold a meditative pose for a few moments and then snapping out of it with an annoyed sound. After releasing its pose, it takes it once more and repeats the process. The feed cuts out once or twice as the youth clearly switches modes back and forth, expression increasingly contemplative.
Finally, however, the camera pinwheels and blurs with rapid movement, repositioning itself to film instead the dark slippers and loose fitting trousers of the youth instead of his face.] If you are going to attempt to meditate, then at least do it properly. [His tone is peevish, and the camera rattles as he crosses the distance toward the pokemon.] If you won't dedicate yourself to your effort, then there is no point in trying at all. Straighten your posture! Close your eyes and focus! [The Meditite begins to speak and he cuts it short, voice severe.] And be silent. You'll never make any progress if you attempt to split your concentration between meditation and speech: choose one or the other or you'll fail to perform either.
[The camera jostles again as he crosses his arms, resulting in an angle which now reveals enough of his face once more to reveal the thin frown of his lips and a jaw partially obscured by falling hair. After a few moments, his posture relaxes somewhat and he sighs. To those listening closely enough, they may catch the words he speaks to himself under his breath, almost disbelieving.] ...Am I lecturing an animal...?
Third Person Sample: It would have sounded far more impressive to any rapt audience he might tell in the future--a possibility he must now consider with his restored life--that a great many thoughts rushed through his mind in the moments between recognizing the Juubi's attack would mean death for Hinata and perhaps Naruto and throwing himself in the path of it for lack of any better method of salvation. Perhaps a great many alternate scenarios and solutions considered and discarded, an inner battle of self-preservation versus selflessness, or even a stroll down the memories of his life that led him to its inevitable conclusion would sound appropriate of a genius such as himself. In truth, no such thoughts flashed through his mind. There was simply no time for any of that, and in fact he could not even say with complete confidence that the path he took was either the best or the only viable option to preserve the most lives.
Indeed, the tale of the death of the genius Hyuga would not be particularly impressive or compelling at all if he were to tell the truth of it. It was just as well, though, telling stories of his own death was perhaps a bit too morbid, even if he was no restored to life. Not that any of it would matter until they found a way to return home, of course. Nothing of his investigations implied that this place was at all the one he came from: not even a distant future discovered through a strange life-preserving or shifting jutsu would explain the discrepancies he found between this place and his home. Neither would it explain why his jutsus--and part of his own natural skill--were all sealed away by a mysterious force. Of course, there was always the possibility that this world might be the genjutsu world they sought to prevent, and it was further possible even his 'death' had only been an extension of that very genjutsu, designed to make him accept this world more readily.
Still, no attempt he made showed any signs of confirming that this place might indeed be genjutsu, no matter the discovery technique he used to attempt to confirm it. By all reasonable indications, it seemed that this world was no illusion. By all other reason, however, that simply wasn't possible. It was a frustrating quandary he found himself in. He could not live his life paralyzed with the fear that this was simply an illusion, and await for it to come crashing down when either the culprits ended the jutsu or another unaffected ninja of significant enough strength and skill freed him from it. If it was, in fact, an illusion, he could do nothing on the matter without possession of genjutsu himself...of which he had only few. Ultimately, despite the impracticality of the situation he found himself in, the only reasonable reaction was to assume this was in fact reality. At least for now.
Reality, it seemed, was avoiding the subject of his death to those he recognized as younger than himself, struggling to train concentration alongside an untrained creature, and attempting to persevere and maintain his sanity and patience through that never-ending music.
